The last samurai war in Edo (Tokyo )

The last shogun, Yoshinobu Tokugawa lost the Battle of Toba Fushimi against the Satsuma -Choshu alliance army in Kyoto
on 12 th February in 1868. Then he left Kyoto immediately and returned to Edo (Tokyo).

After that he made himself house arrest at the Kaneiji Temple in Edo.
On the 5th April, between Kaishu Katsu ,the Shogunate’s plenipotentiary and
Takamori Saigo,the Chief staff of the Imperial army had the summit meeting and Saigo accepted bloodless surrender of the Tokugawa Shogunate
government , peaceful taking over of the Edo castle to the new imperial army which was executed on the 3rd May and also Keiki’s house arrest in his home town of Mito was agreed.

However, some of the shogunate retainers who nominally gathered at the Kaneiji Temple as the guardian of the last Shogun and formed the troops named Shofight against the new imperial army.
Then the Shôgitai warriors started killing some of new imperial army soldiers.
At last, Masujirō Ohmura was appointed as the commander in chief of the imperial army and he officially declared total attack against the Shōgitai would be taking place on the 14th May of the lunar calendar ,the day before attack.
Half of the gathered Shôgitai warriors deserted .
On the 4th July ,( 15th May of lunar calendar ) the battle started at the Kuromon of Kaneiji sanctuary where less than 500 Shōgitai members gathered .


The Imperial troops attacked the enemy from the front and the behind the Temple at the same time,attacking the temple directly with 13 cannons based.

The Shogitai was defeated on the very day.
